Ludvík Svoboda (1895 Hroznatín – 1979 Prague), general, president of the Republic

The birth house (39915/7-7040) of Ludvík Svoboda, Czechoslovak general and CSSR president still stands today in the small town of Hroznatín in the Třebíč region. Ludvík Svoboda had a multifaceted destiny. During World War One, he became a member of the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia. He was a part of the famous legion battles at Zborov and Bakhmach against the Austrian and German military and battles over the Trans-Siberian railway against the Red Army.

Over time, he was at first named the commander of his squad, then platoon, company, and ultimately the battalion. After his return to his homeland, he took over the operations of the family farm for a short period, but gradually made his way back to the military. From 1922, he was an officer of the Czechoslovak Army.

After the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939, he escaped to Poland, where he became a member of the Czechoslovak military unit. Following Poland's defeat, he was captured by the Red Army, imprisoned, and sentenced to death as a spy. The situation changed with Germany's attack on the USSR. Ludvík Svoboda entered into the newly-formed Czechoslovak military units fighting alongside the Red Army, and began to organise and train the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps in Buzuluk in the USSR. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in August 1945 became an army general. He served as Czechoslovak defence minister in the government of the Košice Program, without political affiliation.

In the early 1950s, he was removed from his position in high politics, and was even imprisoned for a short while. In March 1968 during the Prague Spring, he was elected president in place of the discredited Antonín Novotný. For health reasons, he stepped down as president in 1975, and died four years later. Mgr.
